The New Downtown
While waiting for the so-called Umakant to post pictures (so jealous, I love Florence!)... Nothing really all that special about this picture, just kind of cool. Norfolk, as you probably already know, is undergoing a revitalization, and the current phase has much of the valuable downtown property being remade into fancy living spaces. Sadly, some not-so-historic buildings must be demolished, such as this place. Norfolk needs this though, and the old downtown was no Goondocks... mostly failed businesses, closed storefronts. Most so old I had never seen them open the whole time I've lived here.

ciao italia...
so...after deciding on this last minute trip with kiran (tickets were booked sunday, we left monday), i'm sitting here writing from an internet cafe in firenze (my third time here...oy) about to kick kiran in the head. (by the way, he's sitting right next to me looking for a nice murano vase to take home...that doesnt sound very much like kiran, but this is italy and it tends to mess with your head in ways that only italians can understand?)
rome was grand...we actually spent more time in pompei looking and staring at vesuvius on a cool, rainy day. the way the clouds were situated around the mountaintop, it looked like the mount was smoking, kinda making us wonder whether he was about to erupt again. rain...spčaking of which, has been following us nonstop. yes, i got suckered again into buying an overpriced umbrella from an italian street vendor just because i didnt learn my lesson the first two times around and think to actually pack a small one to take with me. that's okay though, cause kiran got suckered into buying two of them...

Crazy films
So Amit suggested I post this nifty xray that was shown to me last night in the ER. Even if you don't have too much medical knowledge, you can probably take a stab at interpreting it. Take your time...
The key is that L in the corner, it means the patient's left side.
Yup, situs inversus. All her organs are backwards. Her heart is on the right, her liver is on the left, her stomach is on her right, and so forth. Pretty rare. She knew about it, and told everyone except the poor resident, who was trying to listen to her heart on the left and couldn't hear much of anything...
So I had started to type up a cool story from the trauma bay last night, when I realized I have an exam on Friday and my time would be better served studying...
