I'll give you a clue, I'm not actually manipulating any instruments and I'm not the woman.
Yep, that's me! I think that was during a VSD repair. Dr. Gilbert is the Peds CT surgeon I spent 6 weeks with last year. It was Awesome! I was talking to Dr. Ross (peds cardiologist) who was saying that Pediatric Cardiology is a cruel mistress, and that the good peds cardiologists don't just want to do it, they are driven to do it, like an artist. They can't imagine doing anything else. I'll continue to keep an open mind, but so far I think that's where I'm at!

Click on the picture for a link to the CHKD posting on Dr. Gilbert and the peds CT surgery team (all incredibly nice & generous people).

(yay!) back to the grind, intern year is quickly coming to a close. Of course, I'm gonna end the year with bang - MICU, followed by medicine wards. My last two blocks promise to be the most painful of my entire year. True to form, however, I will then proceed into child development, NICU and outpatient pediatrics to kick off my second year. Yay!

Oh, and congrats to you matchers! I hope intern year will treat you all as well as it has treated me.

I have two new cameras - a canon sd800 that I got as a replacement when my trusty old s230 became not-so-trusty (thank goodness for warrantees) and a panasonic dmc-fz20 hand-me-down from my dad when he decided to go D-SLR. And the picture I post? From the cell phone, actually. *shrug*

So I finally feel competent as an intern. Seven admissions in an evening? No problem! I can do that without breaking a sweat, I might even be done with my paperwork by one AM... the little things, though, like knowing the all the lab values and culture results? umm... I might have to go back to medical school, as I swear I've lost all my med student skills. sigh.

Oh yeah, the picture. That's the view I get of the train station every morning, waiting for the train. 4:30AM, 30-40 degrees, the winds blowing by... it's pretty miserable. I can't even imagine having to deal with snow.

http://www.projectrelativity.com/blog/index.php?/archives/137-Match-Day-Costume!.html
So Match Day is closing in and I need some help with a costume idea. The theme this year is "Plan B" or what you would be if you weren't going to be a doctor. Here are my ideas so far:

1. Film Director: wear headphones around my neck as well as a light meter or makeshift directors viewfinder. Carry a cardboard tube megaphone that says "director" and a fake Oscar statue. Crazy David Lynch/Tim Burton hair. Most "realistic" but not too exciting. I would get to "thank the academy" when picking up the envelope. Or go the old fashioned route and wear a baret, scarf, sunglasses, and make a fake hand-cranked camera on a tripod to lug around.
2. Photographer/Old fashioned photojournalist. Wear trousers, white shirt and tie with an old-fashioned hat with one of those pieces of paper stuck in it. Either carry my Nikon DSLR or my old polaroid land camera and make a fake flash bulb (the kind you held with one hand in the air) that could have a small point and shoot in it to actually take pictures while "pretending" to take pictures.
3. Ghostbuster. Why Not?! I'm totally serious about this one. I would end up dealing with people who think I don't understand the costume theme though....
4. King of some fake country. Wear a crown, robe, big scepter, medals.....moustache? This could be funny.
5. Robot. Big carboard robot with lots of blinking lights. Probably a pain in the ass to wear. But fun to build!
6. Couch potato (think of "The Dude" from Big Lebowski). Shorts/boxers, unwashed V-neck undershirt, robe, sunglasses, won't shave for 2 weeks or so beforehand, flip-flops, carry a bowling ball bag and a half-gallon carton of milk/half-and-half (or a box of half eaten Cap'n Crunch). Possible sling an xbox controller around my neck. I think this would be a really fun costume. The problem is I have a hunch a bunch of people are going to go with a costume like a "bum" or fast food person (no offense and nothing implied about fast food workers).
7. Butcher. It'd be funnier if I were going into surgery but: wear a butcher's apron and carry a fake meat cleaver. The key would be to be COVERED in fake blood.
9. Crazy guy. Wear an "End of the World is Upon Us" sign (the kind that has two pieces of cardboard attached by rope that you fit between and "wear") and either carry a bell or hand out flyers with crazy stuff on it about the end of the world (or flyers for my "Loss Cat").

So far my favorites are: director, couch potato, & king of a fake country.

Any Ideas?

I've taken a lot of pictures at the Rockefeller Center over the years, pretty much every time I've been to New York in winter. Yet somehow I never tire of it.

It's kind of a busy shot, but at least it's colorful.

So my short little trip to the east coast. It was awesome seeing Amit and the Gearys (Gearies?). I have to say thanks again for them hosting me and spending time with me, despite both Amit and Dan having pretty insane work schedules during the time of my visit. Anyways, hopefully more to come later.

It's not so much that I'm busy as much as things have stabilized. My residency-hating has mostly abated, seeing as now I'm in the middle of my vacation. It's amazing how much perspective you can get when you get enough sleep. It's nice to feel happy in my residency choice, something that's taken less time than I really expected. I remember college didn't truly feel comfortable until 3rd year, and med school until 2nd year. Maybe I'm adapting faster.

Anyways, the photo above is from about a month ago, I think. Kiran had vacation, so he and Sandeep flew out from the east coast to Vegas, and Eric and I met up with them there. Leaving Friday after work, we didn't really get there until almost midnight... We found them in the Venetian rather drunk, and I'm not ashamed to say we might have joined them in the festivities. I managed to break the glass on my first drink, a testament to Kiran's drinking prowess (he chose the drink, after all). We wandered around the casino, and I watched Eric and Kiran play War. Yes, that stupid card game we all used to play when we were young and bored. Despite my mockery, they managed to win some money. 'deep didn't fare so well at roulette.

So anyways, we ended up in a cheesecake factory inside the casino, and we ordered beer. The remainder of the night was a bit of a blur. Suffice to say, we got kicked out and apparently we're no longer welcome at the Venetian... Next thing you know we're walking along the interstate-15 at 4 am trying to figure out a way to cross back to the side where we were staying. We did eventually find the hotel, and crashed, and hence Kiran above.

Sadly, we had to drive back after sampling the lunch buffet. I don't think we were even in Vegas 12 hours, but I was on-call the next day, after all. Medicine wards no less...

Anyways, seeing as I'm on vacation, I should take some new pictures! Particularly since my camera broke, and I got a shiny new one. Gotta love extended warrantees...
