Yes, when nerds vacation, they go to museums. Or at least that's what we do. We spent the morning in the West building of the
National Gallery of Art. Every time I go to our free, world-class, museums in DC I feel guilty about not taking advantage of them more often, and resolve to visit them much more often. We'll see how that goes. I didn't realize that there was only one
DaVinci painting in the United States, which was
exciting to see. One of our favorite paintings of the day (to joke about) was titled "Incredibly Effeminate Man Surrounded by Lions." Actually, I didn't write down the real title, but Heidi & Randall couldn't avert their gaze:
Viewing a
close up of the painting might help you decide whether the man is
praying to be saved, or to learn the secret of those lions
fabulous hair. We also saw a painting hundreds, even billions, of years old that could have come straight from
DC Chases after a big exam.
After hitting all the highlights in the West building we took the futuristic concourse to the East building:
The East building houses the modern art of the gallery, and could easily be considered a piece or
art in itself.
We didn't get to see too much of the modern art, but got a good explanation of Jasper Johns from a
friendly security guard. After six fun hours we started to wind down. If you were wondering how you know when you're friends are ready to leave a museum, it looks like this:
Oh, the joy of museum gift shops.
And what trip could be complete without Randall passing out somewhere?
Next time: "Who knows where the time goes?"
