Leaving Norfolk
Wow, four months in California. Wohoo! Hopefully this will go well. I've obviously never had a chance to practice medicine (or really, pretend to practice medicine) away from school before... so I haven't had much chance to see what medical students from more prestigious schools are like. I'm excited and scared all at the same time... luckily I start of somewhat low-key with a peds cardiology rotation. So I left Norfolk yesterday, and the day before people were making a big deal of my departure. I'm not sure why, but what the hey. I got to eat dinner with the Gearys and with Kevin.
She's growing up pretty fast! 15 months, and she hasn't been afraid of me for quite a while now. I believe the next time I see her, she'll have a little sibling. Boy? Girl? They won't tell me...

summer reflections
it is the first of september now, can anyone believe it? sitting on the porch this morning, there is a chill in the air for the first time this year. the lake is glassy and every blade of grass has got a bright dop of dew. with the change of the weather i am thinking back on the summer. the smooth lake is reminding me of being at honey rock camp in northwoods wisconsin http://www.honeyrockcamp.org/ where the darkness of the water was rivaled only by the darkness of the sky. every star above had its corresponding star below as my friend and i canoed the lake for about 4 hours late one night. oh the days when you can stay up 'til 3 doing whatever you want to do! this is a photo taken at the canoe shack the day before. below is a camper i taught in sailing. we were preparing the boats for a storm that you can see overhead.

Monterey
Luckily the public library has internet so I should be able to post some pictures soon. I just acquired a Nikon D70 and will be putting it through it's paces at the county fair here. In the meantime, I've posted some test pictures here and have also converted a blogger site into a photo page here which I'll be posting PhotoFriday submissions to.

My cheap vacation to San Francisco
"For the full experience, as you view this image, turn the air conditioner down to 60 degrees, play an audio file of a busy waterport and a highway simultaneously, and have a friend lightly mist you with a spray bottle of salt water. "
OK Mark, I thought I'd give it a try....

Man, that salt water REALLY burns your eyes! But the view of the bay makes it all worth while!

There and Back Again... or... How I Worked on a Sundance Film
Reading about Kevin’s brief summer vacation after taking Step I, I remembered my own post boards trip to NYC last year. Mixing business and pleasure, I worked as a production assistant on the shoot of the film Love Ludlow, which later premiered at Sundance 2005.
PA’s are the by far the lowest members of the production team. The position was therefore the perfect experience to prepare for hospital rotations during my third year of medical school. My comrades on set included film students, aspiring filmmakers, and siblings of senior staff.
The first shoot required us to begin setting up at 4 AM, a time of day I would grow to be eerily familiar with over the coming year. While the cinematography crew was busy setting up for the dawn shot at the beach, my fellow PA’s and I attempted to assemble an oversize tent to cover the snack table. After several unsuccessful hours, we gave up and quietly disposed of the evidence. “What tent?”On the second day I was promoted for my excellent work on the tent. Now, brandishing a walkie-talkie and headset, I was posted outside the door to a bar to implore passersby to keep their voices down while filming was in progress.
I had great time with the actors and other crewmembers eating dry bagels and bad coffee between takes. My medical training came in handy when I was sent to the drugstore to buy a band-aid for one the actors who cut his forehead ducking under the bar. All in all, I gained a lot of respect for the production of filmmaking. After all, it took 35 crewmembers, a broken tent, four parking tickets, and six hours to wrap one three-minute scene at the beach.
